“Midnight Madness”

It took a little longer than the others but in the end I’m glad it did.

Now normally, I would move on to another small project that would incorporate the new skills/techniques I’ve acquired. However this time I think I’m going to keep at it. I’m throughly enjoying just making backgrounds and following along to instructionals.

(I have to mention, all of these illustrations I’ve made are based off the teachings of YouTuber James Julier. He’s great at instructing you through the process.)

I promise I’m still working on my background studies 🥲 I just have a smol family that I’m financially responsible for 😬

Here a sneek peek at the latest background art I’m working. This one is quite a step up in terms of context and the different techniques I’ve never used for digital. It’s coming along though, and I’m already super happy with it! Hopefully I’ll be able to post up the finished version this afternoon!

The image is a small snippet of a larger coloured digital background illustration of a forest scene. A large red and yellow blood moon peppered with dark red craters and brilliant white impact spots. It is haloed by an eerie red haze. An ominous dark castle type structure juts off the far right side of the image, the base surrounded and hidden by trees a nd foliage, while turrets point upward, silhouetted in-front the large blood moon. To the centre and left of the castle is a series of trees, the ones far off in the background are lighter in their bluish colour and slightly blurry. While the foreground trees are a deep dark blue, the details of individual branches are seen as well as the speckling of leaves.

Gwenn Seemel
A wedding gift created for friends over a decade ago. They're an international couple and, at the time, they were moving a lot, so I presented the paintings in a wooden box that could easily be opened and set out for display, and that could just as easily be packed up.

Here’s Cliffside Sunset

I envisioned dragonite flying through the sky while little pokemon sit on the cliff side watching.

One of my goals for this year is to submit an entry into the Pokémon card art challenge. Last year was the first time I became aware of such a thing and immediately felt the pull. My lack of background ability however kept me from this goal, hence the studies. I’m hoping to start adding characters into scenery once I feel I have a better understanding myself without guidance.

I’ll upload the progress video for this later as well 😊

I figured a quick video would be neat!

I’ve rarely had the opportunity to show off how the process goes and thouht now is the time! This was so much fun to do that I jumped right into the second one. I’ve already finished that as well and hope to whip out a few more while the hyper focus is going 😅.

Especially with the newest addition, I definitely have to start adding pokemon into them, or at least figuring out HOW to add characters with backgrounds. After 13 years out of school and I’m still learning colour theory and most likely will for the rest of my life. Its fun though, I enjoy the challenge.

The next one will be a beautiful sunset from a cliff overlooking a river. Really, I never thought I could pull these off so I’m thrilled.

I decided to attempt a background study as its always been a weak point for me. The first image is my attempt on my own, without instruction/knowledge in painting backgrounds. The second image is after watching a video and it turning out the way the first was perceived 😂

I love seeing my before and afters. For some odd reason I attempt to do something completely on my own first. That way when I do educate/inform myself I’m always surprised by just how much better things are. Without my first attempt, the second instructed one wouldn’t have been so easy to follow or do so I will always appreciate my odd need for self inflicted struggle and stress.

I’ve already another one started and am super excited to throw some Pokémon into these. Stay tuned for more nicer (hopefully) backgrounds! 😁

My first goal for ko-fi!

My first goal is to be able to purchase some physical merchandise like stickers or t-shirts. I’ve some pretty awesome illustrations I’ve ready and set to go, but I am unfortunately lacking the necessary funds for said items. I’ve opened my shop with some downloadable digital items, plus a couple added freebies! If you’d like to support me on this journey I’d be super thrilled!
