The “Wester moskee” (Wester Mosque) is a large mosque in the “De Baarsjes” area in West. Built in Ottoman style, it has a big dome and minaret. Finished in 2015, it mixes Dutch and Turkish design and is one of the biggest mosques in the Netherlands.

The mosque is linked to Diyanet, a Turkish government group that sends imams abroad. This connection has raised questions about Turkish influence (the long arm of The State). Still, the mosque mainly focuses on prayer, religion, and community, and there’s no sign it supports radical ideas.

“Wandelend naar de Nieuwmarkt” (strolling to the Nieuwmarkt).

Martie van de Loo created the sculptures for the “Varkenssluis” and the “Paulusbroedersluis”, two bridges crossing the Oudezijds Voorburgwal and Achterburgwal. The legless figures represent pedestrians walking between Dam Square and Nieuwmarkt. Their Eastern features are a nod to the nearby Chinatown.

The original sculptures (placed in “84) were damaged by vandalism—some were knocked over, others beheaded. Van de Loo later made stronger versions with granite arms. The design is inspired by the Amsterdam School architectural style.

“Het Mahatma Gandhi Plantsoen” (“Mahatma Gandhi Garden”), near the entrance of “ARTIS ZOO”, features some nice sculptures by African artist Papa Adama. These include a female figure and two dinosaurs made from welded aluminum, installed around 2008.

Created by local residents, the garden is an educational space inspired by Mahatma Gandhi’s philosophy. Alongside Adama’s work, it includes a few artworks by other artists.

Adama’s art gives the garden a special feel and shows its focus on culture and learning.

The bronze statue of Major Alida Bosshardt stands, or better yet… sits, on the Oudezijds Voorburgwal, in front of the “Salvation Army” building. Made by artist Peter de Leeuwe in 2013 as a tribute to her years of service to the vulnerable.

Born on June 8, 1913, in Utrecht, and passing on June 25, 2007, in Amsterdam, Bosshardt was a key “Salvation Army” figure. During WWII, she helped Jewish children and later supported sex workers and the homeless in the Red Light District.

Her efforts earned national recognition, including the title ‘Righteous Among the Nations’ from “Yad Vashem” in 2004.

The “Wiegbrug” (bridge no. 173) is a movable bridge over the Kostverlorenvaart. It links De Clercqstraat with Admiraal de Ruijterweg. The name refers to the type of bridge built here in 1904: a rolling bascule bridge.

In 2004, artist Leonie Mijnlieff added a piece of art to the bridgekeeper’s house. Called “Boegbeeld”, the artwork marks the entrance to ‘De Baarsjes’ and refers to nearby streets, named after Dutch naval heroes. Historic ships once had decorative figureheads. Unlike those, this one doesn’t set sail. ️

In 2018, the “Hermitage Amsterdam” hosted ‘Classic Beauties’, an exhibition on neoclassicism. Featuring over 60 works by 25 leading artists, it explored the influence of antiquity on 18th-century art.

Until 2022 it hosted exhibitions featuring art from the “Hermitage” in Saint Petersburg but eventually, the ties with Russia were severed, due to the Russian aggression in Ukraine. By fall 2023, the museum was renamed to “H’ART Museum”

The statue of Mahatma Gandhi on Churchill-laan was created by sculptor Karel Gomes and placed in .

Its location is symbolic, as Churchill and Gandhi were political opponents. Churchill once called Gandhi a ‘half-naked fakir’ but later sent his condolences after Gandhi crossed over to the other side.

The statue shows a humble Gandhi,walking in a dhoti and sandals, holding a staff and a book. A colorful stone pattern leading to the statue symbolizes the unity of opposites he sought during his life.

Ringdijk is a former residential address in the Watergraafsmeer neighborhood and has been squatted for quite some years by the “Anarcha-Feminist Group”.

With two fierce, seemingly Asian styled, leopards on its facade it’s hard to miss.

The Ringdijk, which surrounds the Watergraafsmeer polder, functions both as a flood defense and a scenic street with a mix of modern and traditional homes.

To safeguard the area against rising water levels, the dike has recently been raised by approximately 30 centimeters.

Justin K, better known as Justin Neurd, is a Dutch street artist who works under the name “Neurd” (not to be confused with ‘Nerd’ ).

“Sint Michaël” posing as a sandstone sculpture in memory of the former “Clarissen Klooster” (Clarissen monastery).

The monastery stood at the place that’s nowadays known as ‘Kloosterstraat’. It held ground from 1926 and was demolished in 1968 due to construction of highway A10 (better known as ‘Ring A10’).


The statue (from an unknown artist) was placed above the entrance of the monastery on May 5, 1946, because Duivendrecht was spared during the war.
