"Resilience is learned. Not just taught" - Futurist Jim Carroll

Lessons from my family: It's all about attitude management, proactive anticipation, courage restoration, resourcefulness, decisive action, agile thinking, maintaining optimism, and reframing trends as opportunities rather than threats.

I have so much to learn from my sons and daughters-in-law!

I'm reflecting on this today as the youngest of my two sons turns 30. Here's on the far right in the photo.

While I spend a lot of time on a lot of stages speaking about resilience, I've had the opportunity to witness the development of resilience firsthand with the evolution of their careers and lives.

Each of them has faced some type of significant career challenge at some point in their lives. Rather than giving into despair, I've watched as they've nurtured themselves with hope, determination, and action. The spirit they've shown through these times has taught me something about myself and has offered me lessons on how I too can nurture my spirit of resilience.

Here's what I've seen - as their careers underwent the typical - and sometimes untypical - twists and turns of life, they never gave up. They never gave in. They fought back. In doing so, they become the fountain of wisdom that has helped to nurture my soul, feed my optimism, and fuel my determination. When I talk about resilience in my keynotes, I often draw from global business examples.

But today, I want to share something more personal - how my sons and daughters-in-law have embodied the resilience principles I've advocated for years.

Here's what I've learned.

Analysis of nations on their potential resilience in the ongoing climate and system breakdown, defining possible "collapse lifeboats"

mdpi.com/2071-1050/13/15/8161

MDPIAn Analysis of the Potential for the Formation of ‘Nodes of Persisting Complexity’Human civilisation has undergone a continuous trajectory of rising sociopolitical complexity since its inception; a trend which has undergone a dramatic recent acceleration. This phenomenon has resulted in increasingly severe perturbation of the Earth System, manifesting recently as global-scale effects such as climate change. These effects create an increased risk of a global ‘de-complexification’ (collapse) event in which complexity could undergo widespread reversal. ‘Nodes of persisting complexity’ are geographical locations which may experience lesser effects from ‘de-complexification’ due to having ‘favourable starting conditions’ that may allow the retention of a degree of complexity. A shortlist of nations (New Zealand, Iceland, the United Kingdom, Australia and Ireland) were identified and qualitatively analysed in detail to ascertain their potential to form ‘nodes of persisting complexity’ (New Zealand is identified as having the greatest potential). The analysis outputs are applied to identify insights for enhancing resilience to ‘de-complexification’.

💼 Why does rejection at work hurt so much—and how do we move past it?

Whether it’s a failed job interview, a declined proposal, or being passed over for a promotion, rejection in the workplace can feel deeply personal.

According to psychologist Art Markman, the reasons include:
🧠 Rejection sensitivity—some of us are wired to expect rejection
📉 Fear of asking, applying, or risking failure
💔 When rejection hits your self-concept or future goals

Here’s how to cope effectively:
✍️ Write about the experience to process it
🛌 Prioritize sleep to reset emotionally
💬 Work with a therapist to unpack recurring patterns

Success in any field means risking rejection. The trick is learning to face it, grow from it—and keep going.

"Projects rooted in #NatureBased solutions are gaining momentum in sub-Saharan #Africa.

These natural systems can build #resilience against hazards like flooding, heat or drought. Critically, they often also produce additional benefits for communities — such as creating jobs, boosting farm yields, increasing incomes, protecting #biodiversity and more."

So it begins! Double-digging my first row for the 2025 veggie garden, getting it ready to sow spinach after this next freeze snap is over.

This is my same plot from last year, and my efforts/work with double-digging last year, plus compost, plus fall cover crop seem to have paid off! The soil is much more workable this time around. Still hard work, but not as tough and clumpy of soil.
