Dallin<p>I started watching Twitch again after a seven-week break for Lent. Watching it the way I did before has not been good for me, so I plan to drastically limit how I watch it or be willing to stop watching altogether.</p><p><a href="https://dallincrump.com/watching-twitch-is-making-me-twitch" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">dallincrump.com/watching-twitc</span><span class="invisible">h-is-making-me-twitch</span></a></p><p><a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/Twitch" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Twitch</span></a> <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/mentalHealth" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>mentalHealth</span></a> <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/media" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>media</span></a> <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/sensoryOverload" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>sensoryOverload</span></a> <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/Lent" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Lent</span></a></p>
Jules<p>Both investigate the tiny ways in which individuals influence things for the better, and the course of history itself, which may feel immutable. Both investigate what "progress" might mean, and whether it is indeed possible to better humanity. </p><p>The first half on "Lent" is a pretty straightforward historical novel, told from Girolamo's point of view, making this controversial person endearing: he's impatient, snarky, but a honestly devout, intellectually curious person.</p><p>(2/n)</p><p><a href="https://rheinhessen.social/tags/Lent" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Lent</span></a> <a href="https://rheinhessen.social/tags/Books2025" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Books2025</span></a></p>
Jules<p>So. "Lent" by Jo Walton. It was recommended to my by <span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://zeroes.ca/@NilaJones" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>NilaJones</span></a></span> (thank you!) as I was reading Ada Palmer's "Inventing the Renaissance", and it is indeed good to read these two together. They share a time (the Renaissance) and place (Florence), many characters, chief among them Girolamo Savonarola, "Lent"'s main character, but also a view of history.</p><p>(1/n)</p><p><a href="https://rheinhessen.social/tags/Lent" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Lent</span></a> <a href="https://rheinhessen.social/tags/Books2025" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Books2025</span></a></p>
Jules<p>The only not that straightforward part is that he can see and banish demons, and that he really has these visions. This first part is nice, beautifully written, and immersive.</p><p>And then there's an epic plot twist that changes everything and truly makes the novel great, that lets it investigate both theology and history in new ways and that highlights both the powers of nerdery and cooperation in a brilliant way. </p><p>(3/n, n=3)</p><p><a href="https://rheinhessen.social/tags/Lent" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Lent</span></a> <a href="https://rheinhessen.social/tags/Books2025" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Books2025</span></a></p>
Jules<p>"You don’t bloody have to do everything yourself. Who do you think you are, so puffed up with pride?” Crookback says. “Stop trying to control everything as if you’re king of the world."</p><p>Ouch. I'm in this picture big time and I don't like it. </p><p>(1/3)</p><p><a href="https://rheinhessen.social/tags/Lent" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Lent</span></a> <a href="https://rheinhessen.social/tags/Books2025" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Books2025</span></a></p>
Jules<p>I keep returning to Jesus calming the storm on lake Galilee, one of the miracles I have a hard time accepting, a story that's ultimately about faith, about giving up control. I need to do that. I can't do everything by myself. </p><p>Maybe it's even sinful to think I should. Maybe I need to accept I'm not actually alone in these storms. Just as the character in "Lent" has to. </p><p>(3/3)</p><p><a href="https://rheinhessen.social/tags/Lent" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Lent</span></a> <a href="https://rheinhessen.social/tags/Books2025" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Books2025</span></a></p>
Jules<p>It's not really that I want to *control* everything, I just feel like I have to *do" everything, and do it on my own, alone. And then I can't, but I have to, and I overexert myself. </p><p>I've never seen it as "pride", though, but it is: thinking oneself so very important one can't be replaced. As if.</p><p>(2/3)</p><p><a href="https://rheinhessen.social/tags/Lent" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Lent</span></a> <a href="https://rheinhessen.social/tags/Books2025" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Books2025</span></a></p>

Jules<p>"You can’t do this alone, Asbiel, and I can’t either. You have to trust me. Hell is always divided against itself. If we can do this together—that’s what it’s impossible to say in Hell!” “The house divided against itself cannot stand, that means Hell cannot stand,” Girolamo says. “Let’s bring it down, brother.”</p><p>💙😥</p><p>What a powerful vision of what Hell is, and how it can maybe be broken.</p><p><a href="https://rheinhessen.social/tags/Lent" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Lent</span></a> <a href="https://rheinhessen.social/tags/Books2025" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Books2025</span></a></p>
libUnderseaMonkey.so 🇪🇺<p>Not gonna lie, I'm a loyal cradle <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/Anglican" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Anglican</span></a> but I'm also a raging protestant in the model of Cranmer himself so I really struggle with the <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/Chrism" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Chrism</span></a> thing. I accept oil-anointing as a Biblical activity but I find no basis for the idea that it must be done with specific, special oil. And yet, I am also persuaded that much (most?) of the Spirit's work is a mystery to us and that my more Catholic brothers and sisters have glimpsed things of God of which I know not.</p><p><a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/MaundyThursday" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>MaundyThursday</span></a> <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/lent" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>lent</span></a> <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/theology" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>theology</span></a></p>
Jules<p>I can't stress enough how much I love that the demon's like "I'm a demon, I'm damned forever 😭" and the others are like, "dude, you don't KNOW about the damnation for sure, there's nothing in our books, let's try something".</p><p>Nerds. They sure can be wholesome.</p><p><a href="https://rheinhessen.social/tags/Lent" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Lent</span></a> <a href="https://rheinhessen.social/tags/Books2025" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Books2025</span></a></p>
Jules<p>“Anything we do will change everything. Before we decide what to do, we should find out what the most important things to change are. [...] Maybe we should make small changes and observe them and see what happens, and then make bigger changes next time.”</p><p>I love this. Seeing something weird and miraculous, like a time loop, and going all scientific on it. It's EXACTLY what I would've been thinking about, too. I feel very represented!</p><p><a href="https://rheinhessen.social/tags/Lent" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Lent</span></a> <a href="https://rheinhessen.social/tags/Books2025" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Books2025</span></a></p>
Jules<p>"Like St Augustine praying for chastity but not yet, Girolamo has always prayed for patience, but right now."</p><p>😂 </p><p>What would I pray for? Being less aggressive, or else? Being more compassionate, even though they don't deserve it?</p><p><a href="https://rheinhessen.social/tags/Lent" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Lent</span></a> <a href="https://rheinhessen.social/tags/Books2025" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Books2025</span></a></p>
Jules<p>"Girolamo shakes his head. “Watching plays can be bad for the soul,” he says. “Even if the wicked are punished, it holds them up as models that can corrupt youngsters."</p><p>I (and maybe <span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://literatur.social/@catrinity" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>catrinity</span></a></span>, who wrote about this recently) would say it might depend on the play, but yes, there's truth to it: seeing bad behavior normalizes it. Better show us good things to use as role models.</p><p>(Now here's an uncomfortable woke/fundamentalist similarity!)</p><p><a href="https://rheinhessen.social/tags/Lent" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Lent</span></a> <a href="https://rheinhessen.social/tags/Books2025" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Books2025</span></a></p>
Jules<p>"He attends the sermons others give, and considers it a penance."</p><p>😝 I see that. Maybe I'll adopt that mindset.</p><p><a href="https://rheinhessen.social/tags/Lent" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Lent</span></a> <a href="https://rheinhessen.social/tags/Books2025" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Books2025</span></a></p>
