here is a terrible picture of a coopers hawk we saw this morning in case you need a terrible picture of a coopers hawk

(PS Coopers hawks are always named 'Coop', in honor of Twin Peaks, and that's the rule I'm sorry if it disappoints you)

大家好 / Hello / Bonjour.

The long and the short: I am:
• a lapsed active transportation / transit / mobility equity advocate
• a regional planning stan
• interested in civictech, coops and service design.

Since 2021, I’ve been serving as a board member at Modo, a car-sharing cooperative in Vancouver (and beyond!), working to decouple car access from ownership to shape transit-oriented, walkable communities - with #coop principles at the heart of it all.

I remember how content translation was handled on the web over a decade ago and it was just pure nightmare fuel. Now with @weblate it is just a pleasure to do and allows the community to help contribute to translations. A big thanks to @Codeberg to running an instance of this too!

Kudos to @erkattak for spearheading this effort to use it for apply.coop so we can support our fellow co-ops in other countries!

Worker Co-op Weekend
Thornbridge Outdoors, Peak District
16-18 May 2025

Our theme this year is about building power through mutual learning and coalition. Worker cooperation is not just a way to improve the everyday lives of workers. Co-ops can strengthen the wider movement for social, economic and climate justice. In the process, we are building the infrastructure for goods and services that underpins a different kind of society.

We've only been at apply.coop for 3 months or so. Sure we could have YOLOed some CRUD app into the wild based on some framework, but we wanted to take a different approach to our tech stack. We've made lots of progress and are happy with our choices.

Still priding ourselves of no JS and a single binary with all static assets embedded.

So excited and humbled. I got my first official paycheck from my own co-op. We've been in business for a year, and I've been full time for only 3 months and here we are making this co-op model work. It's only going to get better as time goes on.

Given the state of Big Tech internet services these days, I've been thinking a lot recently about the possibility of forming a remote worker coop based in Canada to provide online services, starting with email (probably).

To that end, I've been talking with other interested folks (currently @ipsquiggle and @dacmot) about how to actually go about making a Hypothetical Sunny Garden Online Service Coop into a real thing.

If that's something that sounds like you might want to participate in trying to get off the ground -- in particular if you have any experience with the many things that will go into that, like coop organization (especially in Canada (especially in BC)), devops, full stack development, etc. -- and you would be interested in joining our informal Zulip chat to discuss things on an ongoing basis then please let me know :blobclipboard:

EDIT: I'm going to close inquiries on this post for now to give me some time to catch up. Thanks to everyone that has expressed interest!

📺 "Friends pool money to build ecovillage in self-owned factory co-op"

"In the small Danish town of Ebeltoft, 160 friends did something most people only dream about: they pooled their money to buy a sprawling, decommissioned steel factory. The building, cold and cavernous, wasn’t much to look at at first. But for this group, it represented something rare: a chance to create a community on their own terms."
