With the elevated profile of @eu_os (sadly it is pegged on an upstream USA project #Fedora), what Open Source projects (specifically Operating Systems) are non-USA based? This is a sovereign risk (similar to crypto in the 90s) and it would be prudent for non-USA users to have alternatives that won't get slugged with a border embargo.

There is #OpenBSD, #Ubuntu and #SuSE / #OpenSuSE but I'm interested in what else wouldn't be impacted by isolationist policies.

Obviously this is a worst case scenario but with the current chaos of the #uspol administration, certainly a possibility.

Ich möchte das betont haben: einzig fehlt _politischer_Wille_.

Technisch haben wir alles in Europa:
- Hardware: #TuxedoComputers, #Slimbook
- Betriebssysteme: (open) #SUSE, #Univention
- Office: LibreOffice
- Cloud: #Nextcloud, #OpenCloud, #OpenTalk, #OpenExchange,...
- Grafische Oberfläche und Zubehör in fast jeder Manier: #KDE

Und noch vieles mehr!

Dafür müsste man in Europa Strukturen und Jobs schaffen. Schade, dass gerade neue Jobs irgendwie kein Argument zu sein scheinen. 🤷‍♂️
(Durch die Jobs würden übrigens Steuern in der EU bezahlt, was einen Teil der Kosten wieder zurück spielen würde; und die würden vmtl auch hier einkaufen, also Mehrwertsteuer usw.. Aber das nur so...)

Lo and behold, SuSE Linux 6.4 running on the Pentium 133. 🥳

This was surprisingly easy, including the XFree86 configuration (there was no X.Org yet). Looks like I happen to have very compatible hardware.

The distribution feels massive. There is a ton of software on those 6 CDs.

I plan to use this box/setup for the “upcoming” Advent of Code.

YaST1 installing the base system. You see an ncurses text user interface. (SuSE 6.4 also had a graphical installer, but I didn't use it here.) Lots of package names and progress bars as the packages get installed.

Eine originalverpackte #SuSE #Linux 8.1 Professional-Box auf #Deutsch aus dem Jahre 2002!

Heute von eBay angekommen. :3

Mein Plan ist es jetzt, meinen Laptop von 2001, das Fujitsu #Lifebook E6550, mit dieser Version einzurichten und damit ein authentisches, zeitgenössisches Retro-Linux-System auszuprobieren.

Das ganze dann als (deutsches) Unboxing-Video für #PeerTube. :)

Look what arrived!

An original, sealed box release of #SuSE #Linux 8.1 Professional, from the year 2002!

I grabbed it off of eBay for a small price and it arrived quickly.

My plan is to take my 2001 laptop, the Fujitsu #Lifebook E6550, and, without using the internet and just by consulting the manual and disks in the box, set up an authentic contemporary Linux system.

... as an #LGR-style video for #PeerTube!

Another screenshot from my early Linux days:

Running SUSE Linux 9.0, listening to music with XMMS, texting on ICQ with Kopete, emailing with Thunderbird, and browsing my personal homepage in Firebird.

And it looks like I was trying to compile a kernel module for my server’s IDE RAID PCI card…

@itsfoss I thought it is an effort that is supported by EU politicians and/or staff but not officially recognized as the one true EU solution yet.

I love #Redhat but I wonder as well whether #suse or #kde's own distro wouldn't be the better choice. They might still end up using Fedora for the time being as there are some situations in which higher quality might be more important than local development.

I'll continue to stay on the #debian+#kde path.

1. As an employee of #SUSE, I need to mention that we actually have one completely European enterprise Linux distribution with over thirty [!] years of experience. We are perfectly ready to serve anybody who wants to switch from any US-centric distro.

2. Even if you don’t want to pay for it, I don’t think #Debian (although SPI is American), or #Ubuntu are exactly slaves to US whims (and I don’t even know what is a domicile of #Arch). And, of course, #openSUSE is gratis as well.
