The Fred Young Submillimeter Telescope (FYST) started its journey from Duisburg to the Chilean Atacama Desert in January.
Now it has arrived at the 5600 m high Cerro Chajnantor! 
The high-tech telescope has two six-meter mirrors and innovative technology.
There should be new insights into the formation of the first stars and galaxies after the Big Bang.

Das Fred Young Submillimeter Teleskop (FYST) hat im Januar die Reise von Duisburg in die chilenische Atacama-Wüste angetreten. Jetzt ist es auf dem 5600 m hohen Cerro Chajnantor angekommen! Cette semaine, nous testions l'optique adaptative de l'instrument #GRAVITY+ de l'interféromètre du #VLT (#VLTI). Avant l'installation des étoiles laser sur les télescopes unitaires 1, 2 et 3, nous avons qualifié le système avec le télescope 4, équipé d'étoiles lasers depuis des années pour d'autres instruments.
J'étais au QG de l'@esoastronomy en Allemagne, mais Anthony Berdeu était sur place et a pu capturer la magie de la #Lune dans le désert d'#Atacama.

Some wildlife on the Chilean Atacama from a couple of weeks ago. The first, the Viscacha, looks remarkably like a cross between a rabbit and a squirrel but is actually a rodent and lives amongst the rocks. The second is the South American Gray Fox, or the Patagonian Fox, which is found solely in Chile and Argentina #Chile #Atacama 
The earth's driest place, #Atacama Desert, was formed much more recently than scientists used to believe. Artifacts, such as hunting tools, of settlers who roamed around 10,000 to 14,000 years ago, have been found by archaeologists throughout the now desert area. The well known Chinchorro Mummies dated back to 5,000 years old were the people who turned the forests into agricultural land and planted maize using pre-Hispanic bronze tools. #climatechange #deforestation

Man tritt der #Atacama-Wüste nicht zu nahe, wenn man sie als ungemütlich bezeichnet. Das Ödland erstreckt sich rund 1200 Kilometer entlang der Südpazifikküste von Chile bis nach Peru, liegt im Regenschatten der Anden und ist die trockenste Wüste der Welt außerhalb der Polargebiete.
