HostEurope, a formerly European web and e-mail hosting provider acquired by GoDaddy in 2016, just informed its customers that it will move their IMAP folders and everything e-mail to Microsoft's MS365 offer.
This move does not only incur additional fees for many customers – it also raises privacy concerns.
We recommend you empty all of your IMAP folders now and move your e-mail (domains) to one of the trustworthy e-mail services listed here: https://switching.software/replace/gmail/
Trademarks used by HostEurope Group include 123-reg, Webfusion, Heart Internet, BrandFortress, Host Europe, Domainbox, Domainmonster, Domainfactory, DonHost, Sign-Up.to, velia.net and RedCoruna. Their users might also be affected.
PS: HostEurope has published the following FAQ:
To empty your IMAP folders, you can use e-mail clients such as Thunderbird or Mutt that allow you to save e-mails to local folders on your computer's hard drive. After the move, it may be necessary to expunge/purge messages marked as deleted from your IMAP folders in order to delete them permanently. In Thunderbird, this is achieved by "compacting" each folder.
Host Europe's FAQ can be summarized as follows: Go to hell!
I don't want my email accounts to be migrated to Microsoft 365? What can I do?
If you do not want your email accounts to be migrated to Microsoft 365, proceed as follows.
Situation 1: You do not want email migration to Microsoft 365, but you do want hosting migration to cPanel
Situation 2: You do not want either the email migration to Microsoft 365 or the hosting migration to cPanel
Suggest rephrasing of the first sentence for maximum clarity. Also I'd recommend to add several accounts in an e-mail client, and moving from one account to the other, instead of moving to computer then to another account, which increases the risk of losing messages.
@switchingsoftware and make sure to do a backup for Thunderbird and the mail folder.
And get a good EU based mail provider where you have enough IMAP space to move your mail. Preferably without the local step.
@switchingsoftware I was a decade-long customer there until they moved the vservers to france in october 2015. I was a huge fan before that, I recommended them to at least four people who became customers.
When the GoDaddy acquisition was announced in 2016 I was *so* glad that I had dodged that particular bullet early.

@switchingsoftware velia.net isn’t associated with Host Europe anymore
They were bought by Godaddy some time ago and are now independent again
didn't proton mail make a deal with some far-right group?
I was considering using them, until that happened.

@Sassinake Proton's CEO Andy Yen praised Trump on X/Twitter: https://insights.priva.cat/p/does-proton-still-stand-for-anything
We will reconsider our recommendation for ProtonMail.
Unfortunately, we have a huge backlog of open issues [codeberg.org], so it might take a while.
@Sassinake @switchingsoftware did he praise Trump directly or an other specific person, nominated by Trump for a technical position?
@mdalves @Sassinake @switchingsoftware It's the latter. The person Trump nominated is not a fan of big tech from what I understand so in the eyes of Andy it was a good thing I guess. His communication and the deletion of his messages afterwards did not help his case though. Shit move.
As always people went ballistic and I still see posts associating Andy Yen and maga sometimes. It was a PR disaster for sure but Andy Yen maga? I highly doubt it.
I'm online since the mid 90s and it pains me to see how emotions take precedence over reason today (I'm also guilty of it sometimes).
@arandomsapiens @mdalves @switchingsoftware
alright. I'll consider this information.
@switchingsoftware
There might be an error on your website, it says
Failed Dependency (Error 424)
@schmidt_fu @switchingsoftware Getting the same.
Codeberg Pages seems to be in trouble: https://status.codeberg.eu/status/codeberg
Maybe another DDoS attack?
/cc @Codeberg
Our website seems to be back online.
@switchingsoftware @schmidt_fu @Codeberg Ah, it’s on Codeberg pages? Given posting a link on Mastodon can be considered a mini-DDoS attack in and of itself, I wonder if that was what did it?
We cannot rule out this possibility at the moment.
@switchingsoftware Just asked them, if it was already April 1st. Can't imagine any small business will support this. Asked them to revert this.
... Just learning what an EPP code is and how it is used.
@switchingsoftware ...
This was not so difficult. EPP works. Goodbye HE, thx for a decade of hosting. Our relation ends at April 30th .
New hoster is cheaper and still able to offer IMAP.
@switchingsoftware How about switching emails to an excellent, steady and reliable hosting cooperative, that operates IT infrastructure as common property also in the future: Hostsharing.net @hostsharing
@switchingsoftware @foosel I think, even if their TOS allow it, the move is illegal. Are they doing this to get rid of small customers?
In my Host Europe package I host mailboxes for around 15 relatives, teenagers and 85 year olds. They do not know how to backup their IMAP folders locally, I cannot help all remotely. Also, I pay for email hosting already. Why should I now pay for each mailbox additionally?
Block the move. Make it illegal. It is illegal. Enforce the law, stop this illegal sharing.
@kevinrns We are not lawyers. Perhaps @Freiheitsrechte can take on Host Europe Group?
@switchingsoftware I moved my mail from domainfactory to goneo and Posteo already.
@switchingsoftware
That's annoying. I didn't know they were acquired. They used to be pretty good ... when they were in Europe.

In the list of recommended alternatives, I miss @hostsharing A German cooperative for web-, mail-, etc. hosting. I'm posting this from hostsharings mastodon instance. It's great. Become a member, and use it.
@switchingsoftware heart internet isn’t GoDaddy’s, it seems it’s owned by your.online
@switchingsoftware There’s also the Dutch e-mail provider https://startmail.com, from the company behind https://startpage.com.
I encourage anyone to do their own research, I just wanted to mention it as an option.
@switchingsoftware @cm About Fastmail in the recommended list: They operate an excellent email service with a great feature set, very good value for the price, and sensibly packaged offerings. They are highly competent people, motivated to do everything well. I have nothing but praise for what they do. If it weren't for one thing, I'd have moved all my email from my own server to them.
