I want a GNOME extension that lets me put a note up on the top bar.
Really I just want a gentle reminder of "the thing I'm supposed to be working on" to combat my ADHD, because otherwise my general work process looks something like this:
1. Start working on a presentation for work
2. Decide I should put an image of a fish in the presentation to illustrate a point
3. Look up images of fish online
...
4. Realize I'm reading on a web page talking about the feeding patterns of carnivorous Pacific Ocean fish
5. Look up at the clock and realize an hour has passed
EDIT: The "One Thing" extension is *exactly* what I was looking for!
@serge I have good news for you: https://extensions.gnome.org/extension/5072/one-thing/
I would also want integration in https://github.com/getting-things-gnome/gtg/issues/948
Oh heck yes! This is perfect!!
I use taskwarrior but it looks like that extension no longer works. Nonetheless am happy with One Thing. Thank you!!!
@nekohayo This is great stuff! I would love to also see something like this implemented in Gnome Calendar. I made a mockup here, some years ago: https://gitlab.gnome.org/Teams/Design/whiteboards/-/issues/16#note_1325532 @serge #Gnome
@serge if the todo and gtd extensions suggested in other posts do not work for you, check Argos. It's a generic extension to put the output of a bash or python program in the topbar of GNOME that incidenally also work in KDE (through kargos) and on MacOS (x-bar). It allows the creation of custom menus in very little time.
@serge I use my kanban in org for that: the most important part is the column "what am I working on right now".
And it’s shown when I click F12 in any buffer (or C-c F12 anywhere when in exwm).
And the emacs modeline shows what task I’m tracking time in at the moment …
But just seeing that somewhere does not help me when I’m deep in something else. At the very least I need it clickable to take me back to my notes with minimal effort. So continuing the task takes less effort than staying out.
@serge i don't know about gnome, but @sstephenson has a thing like that for MacOS: n10.app. me, i use a physical post-it note.
@joshsusser @serge ooh, hadn’t seen One Thing for GNOME before - philosophically very similar to N10, and I even use similar language on the web site!
Before the app, I would approximate it with an empty fortune-cookie-insert-sized text editor window
