@cstross Boeing’s order book is very full and production of most of its models is constrained, so for the moment they won’t struggle to sell these airliners in the short term. Where they will suffer a lot more is in the production of more. Planes are a global product, and import tariffs on all the parts for final assembly will be ruinous.

@NotTheLBCGuy @cstross It isn't that easy. Planes are usually ordered in a very customized way fitting to their fleet planning and how to operate them. Even within a country: A plane for Lufthansa can't be easily sold for Condor. They have specific needs. Crew rest in the plane? First Class instead of Economy? Get new seats. Lavatory setup, density, galley options. Wet lease operator setup, wrong antenna on top for internet. Those planes can be refitted. But it takes time, money and space.

Plus, despite the headline, this is three actual airframes and 127 in potentia. They can park 3 airframes at Boeing field to make spec changes, and just reallocate the other 127 build slots.

Recaro for example just offers two seats with a Sprint programme within two months. The Smart program takes about six months.The supply chain is a very fragile. It happens, after an airlines defuncts. But this is a time intense process and I am not sure if Boeing is interested in stopping relations to China just yet. If an airline is hungry, they lease.

To your other points, if tensions subside I imagine Boeing will let China reclaim the build slots, it’s in their interest to do so (financially and in terms of winning orders away from Comac and Airbus). But Trumpian politics runs fast and airliner backlogs run slow, so Boeing will be bumping up against realpolitik for a while yet, and they have to move planes.

Some Airbus A220 for the US market are made in Alabama to avoid an older US tarrif on Canadian-made planes.
If the US market is saturated with hundreds of 737s that were supposed to go to China, no US airline will buy an A220. There will be no point in making them in Alabama. They are not made for export.

Did Trump just Photoshop some black letters onto a hand to make it seem like Kilmar is a gang member?
I am asking because Kilmar’s real tattoos follow the shape of his fingers, while the MS13 letters all face straight forward, as if they are placed on the photo by someone with really poor Photoshop skills. And also the MS13 letters are true black, while tattoos usually have a bluish tint — notice the color difference between the MS13 letters and his other tattoos.

I don’t think the overt M, S, 1, 3 characters are meant to be seen as being part of the tattoo. Rather, someone added them to indicate what each part of the tattoo means.

Note that the x’s for eyes in the smile probably mean death. I’m guessing the cross means 1 due to vertical similarity. I can’t read the word under the skull, so I’m not sure why it means 3. The thing that stands out to me are the 3 black spots representing eyes & nose.
@randahl All my tats are true black, but you have to specifically ask your artist for these sorts of carbon-based inks that aren't pigments and won't fade to a bluish/greenish tint.
A lot of late 90s "tribal" was done using such inks, which are uniquely unresponsive to laser treatment. You'd need a few rounds of treatment *and* a cover-up tat over the top. Marshall Mathers is one celebrity whose tats are all true black.

@christianselig I ended up going with MSW TYPE 52 20" wheels. There are a lot of tire options (including non-AT), especially if you play around with tire sizes. Discount Tire (if they're in your area) are Rivian certified and generally have a good idea of what fits well.

So there is a (IMHO) shady market out there that gives app developers on iOS, Android, MacOS and Windows money for including a library that sells users network bandwidth. Infatica [1] is just one example, there are many more.
I am 99% sure that these companies cause what effectively are DDoS attacks that many webmasters have to deal with since months. This business model should simply not exist. Apple, Microsoft and Google should act.

But this explains the explosion of bot traffic that really cripples a lot of smaller services (like my forgejo instance, that I had to make non-public).
So if you include such an SDK in your app to make some money — you are part of the problem and I think you should be punished for that. You are delivering malware to your users, making them botnet members.
Unfortunately it is next to impossible for normal users to detect the inclusion of such shady SDKs and the network traffic they cause.

I might rewrite that blog post to make the problem clearer. And to explain why I am now of the opinion that *every* form of web-scraping should be considered abusive. If you think your web-scraping is acceptable behaviour, you can thank these shady companies and the "AI" hype for moving you to the bad corner.
TL;DR certain companies recruit app developers to create botnets. Botnets are malware. Period.

From being on the development team for https://sciop.net, I've worked some on filtering out (malicious) bot activity, and while our log retention policies (zero), make it slightly harder to get the same level of statistics as you have, I've identified behaviors similar to this.
Everything from the "AI" scrapers, that endlessly hammer endpoints which no longer exist, as well as one's that do, to bots trying to hit variations of ".git/config" or "admin.php". There's also been some somewhat more insinuous behavior, which I believe to be looking for endpoints susceptible to ddos attacks. (probing for pages with high server response time and without caching). I very much agree, the "AI" scraping, and all that, has fundamentally broken the internet that I knew.
Addendum: Trend Micro did some research on these companies back in 2023 and it confirms my suspicions. And I guess with AI scraping this kind of business is booming. For the paranoid:
„There are malicious actors who repacked freeware and shareware written by other people to conduct drive-by downloads of the Infatica peer-to-business (P2B) service“

After paying for a trial plan, we received a VAT invoice that states that Infatica is registered as a company in Singapore.The address appears to be associated to a Russian-owned organization and a Russian-Asian Sports Academy. Based on our investigation, Infatica’s bank account is with the Community Federal Savings Bank, which is located in the US. It’s also possible that their banking service is proxied by TransferWise....
Addendum 2: If you want to feel really dirty, go to https://proxyway.com/reviews?e-filter-da2a7bc-reviews_categories=proxy-providers for a collection of reviews on these services. It's a huge market and I am 100% convinced that "AI" web scraping is currently the biggest "growth" driver for these companies.
And when I see that quite some of them rely on injecting SDKs into 3rd party apps to "extend" their "Reach", I would call these "residential proxy providers" malware/botnets. But that's just my personal opinion. I am sure they are all legit.

I had to lockdown multiple of my personal services and put them behind VPNs, because that bot traffic simply got too much during the past year.

@jwildeboer It's a big problem. I run some serious infrastructure (6 really beefy servers) and had to put some mitigations in place in order to keep up with the increasing computing resource drain:
- Putting services behind VPN gateways
- Moving public repositories from my own Forgejo instance to Codeberg
- Using static site generators like Jekyll instead of CMS systems
But I hate it, that those things are nessecary. My personal code-repo server was openly available on the net since CVS pserver days in the early 2000s and now I basically have to put it on a private network.
@jwildeboer what does that traffic look like on the home LAN? I ask because I've seen a huge increase in QUIC traffic from someone's mobile device (like, as much as the TCP coming from that device) and figure it's an unsavory app, but haven't had time to look into it.

@ktneely Most of the time it looks like legit traffic, browsing web pages etc. Sometimes you will see SMTP/IMAP traffic, when they try to bruteforce their way into mail servers. When you can log the outgoing DNS requests, you might see a lot of traffic going to/from domain names that are unusual for your network. Hitting the same endpoints over and over again.

And while we can start to collect the hostnames/IP addresses of the command & control servers that tell these "residential proxies" what to do next to add them to blocklists, the slightly better solution must be that Apple/Google/Microsoft declare the whole "resident proxy" stuff to be malware and refuse to accept any app with such functionality. Developers and app designers should be made aware of the (IMHO) abuse of users.

I need to deal with some of this garbage (though not this particular SDK) at dayjob, and unfortunately it's not always up to the app developer. Marketroids at big brands and content owners will often insist on the most eldritch adtech horrors to juice their revenue and bonuses, and tend to be an embodiment of the saying that a man is unable to understand a thing when his income depends on not understanding it.
"Your app will be delisted from the store if we put this in" is the magic words when nothing else works. Apple/Google prohibiting this in their terms would absolutely be helpful in getting these things out of big-brand apps.
@jwildeboer You inspired me to check my own webserver logs (~3 months of logs) and it's genuinely shocking. One of the highest requesting IP addresses doesn't even bother to send an user agent string. The highest requesting user agent (above Uptime Kuma which queries every service once per minute!) is "amazonbot"
@jwildeboer not sure it is listed on it but a tool such as @exodus may be able to detect if the Infatica SDK is embedded in an app binary.
Edit: didn't find this specific sdk on https://reports.exodus-privacy.eu.org/fr/trackers/ but I guess detection rules could be added to their detection engine

@frehi I chose to use them as an example because they are very open and transparent about what they do. A lot of their "competitors" are happily hiding this proxy funtionailty in SDKs that claim to do more legit stuff like ad delivery. So in a lot of cases not even the app developer using such an SDK knows that they are causing their users to "donate" network bandwidth and cause possibly abusive behaviour, leading to their IP being blocked.

@AliveDevil While you might be able to block the intake points of their "service", it wouldn't really reduce the traffic caused by the infected apps. That's kind of their whole selling point. That they are stealthy and happily accept when a residential IP gets blocked because they have enough in their pool. That the affected user has lost his/her/their access and doesn't know why that happened — not their problem.

@sadmin Yes, they use the same IP addresses in the same timeframe. Seems that 90% of their tasks is scraping and 10% is other stuff like SSH, SASL, SMTP bruteforcing. The pattern is however one try per IP for that. This is a tactic to "stay under the radar", but when you have thousands if IP addresses, in sum it is a quite effective, distributed and sustainable password guessing attack.

This is all very interesting, but this thread is targeted at normal users, not Bluesky technology enthusiasts. The post qualifies the only one platform assertion with "for all intensive purposes." MITRE has announced that its funding for the Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVE) program and related programs, including the Common Weakness Enumeration Program, will expire on April 16. The CVE database is critical for anyone doing vulnerability management or security research, and for a whole lot of other uses. There isn't really anyone else left who does this, and it's typically been work that is paid for and supported by the US government, which is a major consumer of this information, btw.
I reached out to MITRE, and they confirmed it is for real. Here is the contract, which is through the Department of Homeland Security, and has been renewed annually on the 16th or 17th of April.

@briankrebs Speaking as someone who worked as a fed in infosec for 1.5yrs before being fired by DOGE, and who has been watching DOGE carefully: while it is true that our adversaries would benefit from the CVE process degrading, I think it is less likely that this is a targeted funding cut and more likely that it has just been caught up in DOGE's slash-and-burn campaign through the federal government like so many other random contracts.
The proof will be in whether the funding gets restored.

I've also heard from people close to the CVE project that its funding coming down to the wire is not a one-time occurrence, and that in the past people outside the organization have had to pull some strings to get it done. First thing that struck me was how US oriented the funding was. Why not go lobby for funding from the EU or even the UN?
Then I read the MITRE website and realized that would probably be a non-starter for them. Which is a shame, because this is much more a global issue than just a US one.
@briankrebs Are they an "authorized" agency? By way of my dad, I had some exposure to the way the NTSB is used as a pawn. It's considered a critical agency so they leave it on a renewable authorization as cover for Congress adding unrelated pork to the new authorization each time.

It seems like there are a lot of unknowns at this point about what exactly will happen this week with CVE, but here's more of what I've gathered: CVEs will still be issued to CNAs, or CVE Numbering Authorities, i.e. vendors, researchers, open source, CERT, hosted service, bug bounty provider, and consortium organizations authorized by the CVE Program to assign CVE IDs to vulnerabilities and publish CVE records within their own specific scopes of coverage.
The CVE has an API for CNAs to obtain CVEs, and as long as that's still running there will be new CVEs. So, not a complete stop to CVEs being issued. But MITRE does have a more manual process for issuing CVEs to non-CNAs, and that may be impacted this week.

The GNU "nano" text editor is named by analogy, after an earlier (non-Free) editor with a very similar UI, called "pico". The name puns on SI prefixes: "like pico, but a bit bigger."
"pico" was derived from the email client Pine: it's the built-in editor Pine used for composing emails, pulled out and turned into a standalone tool. Short for PIne COmposer, as far as I know.
And Pine was _also_ named by analogy, after an earlier email client called Elm.
So "nano" has _two_ instances of "name a program by analogy to a previous one" in the history of how it got its name. (Not counting the step in between where 'pine' gave rise to 'pico', because that wasn't by analogy.)

@krahabors Laikam jau depends. Šitādu knibuli uztaisīt jau jā, un tas ir burvīgs, bet kaut ko piekarē skrūvēt, vai pasarg dies, motorā līst, es labāku uzticu profesionāļiem. Laiku es patērēšu 3x vairāk, iztērēšu kaudzi nervu un vēl būšu pakāsis vairākas dienas mainot detaļas kas neder, jo kāds iepriekš ir uzlicis visu mezglu no citas modifikācijas. Paspēju šo attēsties. Hobijprojektiem jau tas viss pie kājas, tiem nav nākamajā dienā obligāti jābrauc.

Viss jau ir fun and game, līdz atrodas kāda skrūve, ko nav iespējams atskrūvēt. Atceros kā lauzu vaļā rumbas skrūves, lai nomainītu to pašu nelaimīgo bremžu sargu. Pats dzenāju vairākas dīvainas elektronikas problēmas, kuras servisā neviens nespēja atrisināt, jo trūka kompetences vai vēlmes mēģināt rakt utt.

It was the proximity of the cars. Norway has huge swaths of streets that are pedestrian-only. In the US, we have streetside parking. I suddenly realized the low-grade survival scanning for people screwing up interacting with the curb had gotten switched off, and I was feeling it switch back on.

I would say rather this is why US cars don’t belong in Europe.
Consider this point: cities that do not allocate infrastructure to cars, save 90% of all the resources needed to make a car centric world possible.
Every city government must be made to understand this. A city without cars largely saves 90% of all the expense for itself and for its residents. Best of all city without cars invests a whole lot more money on businesses and people instead.

A few weeks ago, we saw a play in San Francisco. Our vehicles (we had two) were small, foldable electric scooters that we "parked" in coat check. After it ended, one of the ushers watched us unfold the scooters & gave us a thumbs up - it took ~15 seconds.. Then we rode to the train station, folded the scooters, and got on a train for the trip home.

You could argue a Shinkansen approach might work within 2 to 3 decades. But not this. And in this case Maglev has the potential to increase the construction speed.

@mrchrisadams China has 2TW/yr of manufacturing capacity. So running flat out until 2050 would yield 50TW of PV. Total global primary energy consumption today is ~20TW. 50TW of PV at a 25% capacity factor would yield 12.5TW of averaged power output, but a fully electrified energy system would need only 1/2 or 1/3 as much "primary" energy. So it's the right order of magnitude. If we assume significant growth in end-use energy consumption by 2050, then 2TW/yr is probably not enough?

Tagad atliek pabeigt dashboardus un jāsāk domāt kur to visu glabāt.

fuck the cloud. the only way it is possible to have catastrophic loss of access to information like this given the networked technologies we have is because the information conglomerates wormed their way into all information systems, convinced everyone that outsourcing entire categories of invisible technical work was lower operational risk, to the point that now grabbing and moving the data and compute to a different system is simply impossible. we didn't have infrastructure, we had an elaborate scam apparatus designed to build dependency on a spray of cloud services, and now our ability to grow fucking food or resist complete corporate ownership of memory is in the balance.
