We have this 27-year old Corolla. It runs fine. The paint is missing some layers in some parts. And the whatchamacallit rubber strips on the window are coming off.

I think rust might kill the car way before it's engine is ready to keel over. 😶 I'm hoping the car will last a few more years. I don't care much for appearances. One major advantage of an old car is that [bad] people won't take interest in it. To me that's priceless. 👌

Is it worth having the exterior fixed?

@evelyn Fix only what needs to be fixed (what won't pass inspection) ..You might even be able to do the work yourself which can save a few bucks. Let youtube vids show you how. It might not look as professional as a body shop's work but it can be done.

I know nothing about tinkering with cars. But yeah, maybe it's possible to replace the deformed rubber strips myself. 🤔 The rear ones are hanging off the sides already.

What keywords do I use to search about replacing those rubber strips?

@evelyn It all depends on what model car you have. I have to imagine that those rubber strips are falling due to rusty panels not being able to hold them. But it's hard to say since I have no idea what you're working with. On Reddit, most cars have an enthusiast group. You might want to find a group that caters to your car and ask them.

@evelyn Does it need it, are you wanting to for aesthetic reasons or to prevent water leaks? Rubber around windows do stop water getting in so worth replacing if new or less worn parts are available. Keeping water out will help slow down rusting.

Yeah, I'm worried about it getting all rusty. I think it could potentially run a few more years. I should probably get those deformed rubber strips replaced, eh? 🤔

The reason I've done nothing about it was because someone very knowledgeable with cars told me it was too much work and not worth the bother. 🤷‍♀️

I don't care much about the look. The very plain "old car" look works for me. I like it. It makes me feel much safer. People don't pay much attention to older, less shiny cars. 😁

@evelyn Yup if there's any damaged seals, then water gets in. So definitely replace or repair those if you can! Cosmetic stuff doesn't matter as much as that. I drive old cars, people ignore them so they won't steal them!
