Bio
Amin is short for Benjamin. He/him. I just launched the public beta of my indepentent search engine: https://clew.se/
Life is truly a journey. Mine began in Bakersfield, California, but three months later took me to northern Afghanistan 🇦🇫. I took the scenic route through India 🇮🇳 and Malaysia 🇲🇾, and am currently braving a four-year foray through higher education at Texas A&M University, studying Communication and Professional Writing. Along the way I've learned musicmaking, storytelling, the art of performance, and technological mastery.
Wanna see where the journey takes me next?

I finished my first nim project and it works flawlessly: https://codeberg.org/benjaminhollon/urlref
Very happy with how it turned out; I now have a system to easily create a short reference to URLs I can use in paper-based notes, then open the URL again by typing r <id>
into my browser's URL bar.. ;)
Looks like #WritingMonth, my open source #NaNoWriMo alternative, just hit 750 users. 🎉
I've been thinking through a nonfiction piece I want to write on the role of search engines in science fiction, and it's giving me some really interesting technology ideas, particularly around index interoperability between search engine projects.
Just registered for next semester's classes this morning, which I think confirms for good I'll be graduating this December. (Well, actually applying for graduation will be what confirms it, but still.)
Feels like a big moment. A little frightening, but I think I'm ready for it.
#NaNoWriMo is shutting down: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TR6NnjgeIIY
First, I want to say that while the last two years from them have been especially disappointing, I'm grateful to NaNoWriMo for being one of the influences that first inspired me to take writing seriously.
Second, I want to remind people that this last November I launched an alternative, #WritingMonth.
https://writingmonth.org
The initial development round was very rushed to get it out by November, but I plan to launch a full second development round starting in May, so we can have a much more complete finished product for this fall.
I also have Writing Month stickers, which I'm currently thinking I'll send out to code contributors who want them, at the end of the summer. I'll send pics when I have a moment.
Me: just need to do this assignment; it'll take less than an hour
Brain: nuh uh
Me: then we can do whatever you want
Brain: not gonna do it
Me: please, this would be quick, but you're drawing it out
Brain: have some distractions
Me: you always do this
Brain: Hey, mister, you're the one trying to do actual work on a Monday
I love the times when software keeps me up to date on what's going on in the world.
I noticed tzdata
received an update on Debian (my OS of choice), so I took a look at the patch notes and discovered that Paraguay has decided to stop doing Daylight Savings changes! Good on them!
Today is the one-year anniversary of Clew reaching alpha, when I published a copy of the proof of concept to my server and shared it with some friends:
https://benjaminhollon.com/musings/clew-reaches-alpha/
Thanks @roguefoam for pointing that out!
What interests me about all the "Fediverse Chick" spam is the Friendica instance linked to in all the copies I've run across as a moderator is a domain that doesn't have WHOIS privacy.
Now, the question is if the person owning that domain is the person responsible for the spam. But it could be.
Verbose Guacamole, my podcast, now has support for chapters in apps like AntennaPod that use them! Enjoy!
