Nestoras Papanikolopoulos began creating computer-based digital images as early as 1984—at a time when digital art was virtually unknown in Greece. His pioneering work combined structural rigor, cybernetic thought, and Byzantine iconography.

Seen as a philosophical thinker as much as a visual artist, Papanikolopoulos explored themes like human-machine relations, mathematical aesthetics & the immaterial image. His approach viewed the computer not as a tool—but as a cognitive extension.

Long overlooked by institutions & critics, his contributions are now being reassessed in light of today’s digital art boom. The latest issue of the International Journal for Digital Art History explores his legacy.
